Wart Removal for Different Types of Warts

Warts are growths on the skin that are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). About 75% of people will experience a wart at some point throughout their lives. There are several different types of warts. Common round warts appear on the fingers, toes, and backs of knees. Other different types of warts include plantar warts that appear on the bottom of the foot, flat warts that can appear in large numbers on the face, legs, or other areas of the body, periungual warts which appear around or under the nail, and filiform warts that frequently occur on the face.

Flat warts most commonly occur in children and usually appear on the face. Flat warts can also appear on the arms, knees, or hands and can sometimes appear in clusters. Flat warts can be a bigger problem not only because they can be embarrassing for children, but because they can itch or be painful, particularly when they appear in large numbers.

Certain different types of warts can also be painful, particularly plantar warts. Other types of warts cause little harm but can be an annoyance, and in some cases, they’re embarrassing, especially if located on the face, hands, or other area frequently noticed by others. Wart removal is the only remedy that will remove the annoyance and the embarrassment.

The most common form of home wart removal is through the use of duct tape. Although this treatment can take weeks, some claim that the method is very effective for wart removal. Over-the-counter wart removal treatments are also available, most of which contain salicylic acid, a common acne medication.

Skin tags are slightly different from warts. Skin tags are benign, flesh colored growths on the skin that commonly occur in areas where the skin experiences friction, through rubbing against clothing or other skin. Skin tags can become irritated, although the most common reason people attempt home removal of skin tags is simply for cosmetic reasons. Unlike warts, skin tags are not caused by HPV and they affect approximately half the population at some point. Some people are much more likely to experience the growth of skin tags regularly than others. Increased hormone levels during pregnancy can cause the growth of skin tags as well.

Home removal of skin tags can be accomplished through tying a piece of thread or dental floss around the tag and allowing the tag to fall off over the course of several days. Home removal of skin tags is also possible through applying a mixture of castor oil and baking soda to the skin tag each day for up to two weeks, causing the skin tag to dry up and fall off.
